The Günter Thiele Foundation is organized within the Association for German Science Foundation (Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft) and is subject to legal supervision by Sachsen. It was established in December 2014 as an independent and non-profit foundation. It was the successor to the Foundation for the Promotion of PR at the University of Leipzig (SPRL).
The foundation aims to promote science and research as well as young researchers and teaching in the fields of communication management, public relations and strategic communication. In particular, it seeks to continue and expand the work already done at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies of the University of Leipzig.
Among others, the foundation's purpose is realized by organizing and leading the Academic Society for Management & Communication.
The foundation was named after the co-founder and honorary chairman Dr. h.c. Günter F. Thiele, who has supported public relations research in German speaking countries since the early 1990s. Previously, Thiele was co-owner of the then largest PR agency in Germany ABC Presse-Information.
