We welcome Merck to the Academic Society
We are delighted to welcome Merck as a new partner of the Academic Society and are pleased to have Axel Löber join our Corporate Advisory Board as its newest member.
Axel Löber is Head of Communications of Merck and leads the global communications activities of the science and technology DAX company.
Prior to joining Merck in 2023, he was Chief Marketing Officer at the energy company E.ON, where he was responsible for the company’s international marketing, branding, insights, and customer experience activities. From 2010 to 2018, Axel already worked for Merck, heading Corporate Branding & Communication Strategy and being responsible for the company’s transformational rebranding in 2015. Previous roles included further positions in corporate and financial communications at the pharmaceutical wholesaler and pharmacy operator Celesio. Axel also worked at the strategic advisory firm Hering Schuppener (now FGS Global).

We had the pleasure to get to know Axel Löber a little bit better during a brief chat. He not only told us what inspired him to join the Academic Society and what he loves about his job, but also what he just can’t stop talking about, and the talent he wishes he had.
What motivated you to join the Academic Society?
To connect with peers and explore ways to advance our profession based on academic research.
What do you love most about your current job at Merck?
To work in a diverse, global team.
Where do you see the biggest opportunities for innovation in communication at your company?
Like other brands, leveraging the opportunities of AI for communications.
What is your go-to way to unwind after a long day?
Having inspiring conversations with friends, or a good book.
What topic could you talk about for hours without getting tired?
Where to find interesting new restaurants.
If you could have any talent, what would you choose and why?
Cooking. As I love good food, this would make my life much easier.
