A management framework for corporate influencer programs

Lesezeit: 3 Minuten

Corporate influencer programs have become an established instrument in corporate communications. However, in economically challenging times, communication departments face increasing pressure to justify investments and demonstrate the value of their programs. Yet many organizations still lack a structured approach to defining objectives, measuring success, and reporting results.

Based on interviews with communication leaders and CI program leaders from 52 large organizations, a research project by Leipzig University introduces the Corporate Influencer Program Management Framework. The framework provides a practical approach to planning, evaluating, and reporting corporate influencer programs and helps organizations align corporate influencer activities with strategic communication and organizational goals.

What makes a corporate influencer program successful?

Corporate influencer programs are widely adopted, but organizations still struggle to answer a fundamental question: What makes a corporate influencer program successful?

Existing approaches typically focus on isolated social media metrics such as likes, impressions, or engagement rates. While these indicators provide useful insights into communication activities, they offer only a partial picture of program success and limited guidance for strategic decision-making.

The study therefore proposes a broader perspective on performance – one that considers not only the activities of corporate influencers but also how the program itself is designed, managed, and aligned with organizational goals.

Success has two dimensions

Successful corporate influencer programs depend on more than successful influencers. They require two complementary performance dimensions:

Program Performance refers to the success of the program management processes that enable and coordinate the activities of corporate influencers and ensure alignment with overarching organizational strategies.

Communication Performance refers to the success of corporate influencers’ communication activities, as reflected in how they use their resources, the quantity and quality of their output, their touch- points with stakeholders, the effects on those audi- ences, and how this helps to achieve project goals or organizational goals.

The Corporate Influencer Program Management Framework

The Corporate Influencer Program Management Framework combines Program Performance and Communication Performance for a more holistic approach to planning, evaluating, and reporting corporate influencer programs.

It supports:

  • defining objectives
  • identifying meaningful KPIs
  • measuring success systematically
  • aligning corporate influencer programs with strategic goals
  • demonstrating the value of CI programs

The framework also highlights how both performance dimensions influence each other and should be managed together rather than in isolation and which other influencing factors needs to be considered. Moreover, it provides a common language for planning and reporting across management and communications.

Put the framework into practice

Analyze and align

Develop a shared understanding of the program by defining objectives, KPIs, and measurement approaches that support broader communication and organizational goals.

Coordinate activities

Provide transparency and guidance for corporate influencers while continuously improving day-to-day program management.

Report and demonstrate value

Communicate results in management terms, demonstrate the contribution of the program, and strengthen long-term organizational support.
