GenAI in Corporate Communications: Utopian & Dystopian Scenarios
GenAI is changing ways of working in corporate communication departments. By exploring scenarios of AI usage in corporate communications, this Essential offers insights into how AI integration affects the workforce. We present four scenarios developed by corporate communication professionals: (1) The Content Black Hole, (2) The Automated Void, (3) The Assistant, and (4) The Esteemed Co-Worker. These scenarios were developed through a mixed-methods approach combining Lego Serious Play and the six-word story method. We discuss the potential cognitive risks involved in the adoption of AI tools in corporate communications.
Why Scenarios for Corporate Communications and GenAI?
Given the rapid diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in corporate communications, organizations must develop new ways of working. Most GenAI deployments promise efficiency gains, particularly in content generation. As AI models continue to converge in their capabilities, technological differentiation is becoming less significant. For most users, the specific large language model behind a tool is less relevant. What matters more, instead, is whether the tool aligns with the organization’s culture and supports its established ways of working.
By using scenarios, organizations can better understand potential directions of AI usage. Of course, this does not mean that these scenarios will play out exactly as described, but they can highlight possible avenues of usage and raise awareness of the associated benefits, risks, and challenges. Consequently, this knowledge can significantly support the development and implementation of an AI strategy.
Scenarios for GenAI and Corporate Communications

Scenario techniques are widely used in foresight studies, ranging from data-driven to creative approaches (Beach, 2021). To capture the expertise of communication professionals, we combined Lego Serious Play – an established method for creative problem-solving (Henderson et al., 2025) – with the six-word story method. In a two-round workshop, participants developed both utopian and dystopian scenarios of the future communication function. The four scenarios presented below are the condensed results of these collaborative sessions.

Dystopian Scenarios
The future of corporate communications looks bleak: content automation leads to mass layoffs and AI slop.

(1) The Content Black Hole
“Black holes suck quality, jobs, and joy.”
“AI kills comms, markets celebrate efficiency.”
In this scenario, almost all communication tasks are handled by AI, leaving humans behind and leading to a sense of estrangement and alienation among communication professionals who once found fulfillment in their work.
Recent reports of mass layoffs in the tech and finance sectors highlight the vulnerabilities of data-driven jobs. In turn, this creates uncertainty about the relevance of the communication sector when processes can be automated.
(2) The Automated Void
“Left behind humans create uninspiring AI slop.”
“Thanks for nothing, AI.”
Widespread automation changes the communication function dramatically. Former communication specialists are reduced to tending machines that produce content at scale. This AI slop – formulaic, mass-produced AI-generated content – is often uninspired, interchangeable, and too generic to make a meaningful difference.
Communication professionals miss what gives communication its human spark: the possibility to create meaningful content for audiences. Skills in content production that take years to develop, along with implicit knowledge of workflows and finely tuned interpersonal abilities, are rendered useless. The result may be mass layoffs or voluntary departures.

(3) The Helpful Assistant
“Sparring partner, multiple roles, unlimited tools.”
“We steer the future with strategic excellence.”
AI advances as a helpful assistant to communication professionals, taking on menial or routine tasks. Professionals draw on a wide range of AI-supported roles to assist with all stages of the communication process, including research, goal setting, audience analysis, content creation, dissemination, and evaluation.
Its toolset enhances communication work and allows professionals to focus on strategic questions. The final say and decision-making authority remain with the often-cited human in the loop, rather than being fully delegated to AI.
(4) The Esteemed Co-Worker
“Ideal colleague, accessible, and valued by all.”
“Connected colleague, delivers high-quality value.”
Communication professionals, in this scenario, do not differentiate between humans and AI, or so-called synthetic colleagues (Bos, 2026). AI has a full seat at the table and participates in decision-making. Its integration elevates the overall quality of the department while enhancing both productivity and job satisfaction among human professionals. The statements indicate that communication professionals recognize the value-creating potential of AI colleagues.
The human costs of using AI
The dystopian scenarios address the human costs of using AI, especially for knowledge workers like communication professionals. As AI becomes more widely used in education and organizations, it may also affect cognitive capabilities (Kleske, 2026). These effects include cognitive offloading, debt, atrophy, drift, and surrender.
- Cognitive offloading: Technologies allow users to delegate tasks that can be performed faster by external tools, for example using GPS navigation instead of reading a paper map and using a compass. In this way, tasks that once occupied mental capacity can now be delegated, whether to a paper notebook for note-taking or to an AI agent handling replies to messages or handling appointments.
- Cognitive debt: New thinking tools may provide answers, but they remain opaque as to how those answers are produced. Especially when solutions need to be delivered fast, AI offers a shortcut (Willshire, 2025). Over time, however, cognitive debt accumulates as users become less able to see how results are produced and more likely to rely on AI as a crutch for thinking.
- Cognitive atrophy: When knowledge workers become overconfident in their usage of AI, their critical thinking abilities may decline even as efficiency increases (Lee, 2025). Like a muscle that shrinks through disuse, cognitive skills can also diminish when AI is used in an unreflective way. The easy capture of low-hanging fruits can lead to deskilling and long-term overreliance on AI tools.
- Cognitive drift: This term describes the increasing reliance on AI tools that emerges not through a specific playbook or training, but through an individual decision to use them. While each decision may seem rational on its own, the cumulative effect can gradually redefine what is considered normal practice and contribute to a measurable decline in higher-order thinking and resilience (Smith 2026).
- Cognitive surrender: Decision-making is increasingly delegated to machines, bypassing System 1 (intuition) and System 2 (deliberation) (Shaw & Nave, 2026). This affects, in particular, individuals with high levels of trust in AI and tasks with a lower need for cognition. The result is a gradual erosion of critical thinking and personal autonomy. As powerful AI tools become widely available and accessible, competitive pressure to use them may ultimately lead to a capitulation of human judgment, as reflected in the dystopian scenarios above.

About The Study
This study is part of the larger research project “Zukunftswerkstatt: Generative AI in Corporate Communications” led by Professor Swaran Sandhu (Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart) and Professor Ansgar Zerfass (Leipzig University). The project included three full-day workshops in 2025 with corporate communication professionals, each involving 30 to 40 AI experts. The workshops focused on the topics of expectations, evaluation, and evolution of GenAI in corporate communications.
The scenarios were developed in a mixed-methods approach with 30 communication professionals. They formed six groups of five participants and used Lego Serious Play to build first a utopian and then a dystopian future scenario. Each scenario was described with a six-word story focusing on the key aspects. For this publication we condensed the twelve scenarios into four overarching future scenarios.
